Insar analysis of the effects of the Izmit earthquake with ERS data

چکیده
After the 17/08/99 earthquake in Turkey, ESA and CNES decided to coordinate their efforts for the emergency study of the earthquake effects based on satellite observations (ERS, SPOT). In particular, a set of archived ERS acquisitions over the interested sites was promptly provided by ESA, a series of tandem acquisitions were programmed (ERS-1 was switched on over Turkey) and the acquired post-event images were also made available. This allows not only for the study of the first seismic effects, but also for the evaluation and monitoring of the post-seismic deformations. For the particular case of the ERS-1 and ERS-2 orbits 30 and 31 days after the first earthquake, the orbit control strategy could exceptionally take into account InSAR requirements, obtaining minimal orbital baselines between co-seismic interferometric acquisitions over the site of interest. This paper will present part of the interferometric results obtained at CNES and ESA, using the best available dataset. Several interferograms are compared in order to take into account possible residual topographic effects, and analyse the effect of orbital errors or possible atmospheric artifacts. Further analyses based on different techniques are still ongoing at CNES, such as correlation of optical data and radar multitemporal analysis.

Uncertainty analysis of earthquake source parameters determined from InSAR: A simulation study
[1] We assessed the accuracy of earthquake source parameters inverted from simulated Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data. Using focal mechanisms of Australian earthquakes (1959 to the present), we simulated synthetic two-pass InSAR observations with realistic spatial noise derived from the characteristics of actual ERS-2 and ENVISAT InSAR data observed over Australia. The prec...
متن کاملGround Deformation Mapping Using Insar
SAR interferometric data can be used for extracting three dimensional information of the earth’s surface by using the phase part of the radar signal. In this study, available SAR interferometric data acquired before and after the Marmara earthquake of 1999 and provided by ESA were used for mapping the ground deformation in the satellite line of sight (LOS) in the Izmit province. The interferome...

During tandem period of ERS-1/2 (April June 1996), field experiments were conducted in Bhavnagar test site with Corner Reflectors (CRs) to study the sensitivity of differential SAR interferometry to estimate the movements of CRs. Initially, three images acquired on April 4, 5 and May 9, 1996 were processed to generate interferograms. Using single interferogram formed with April 4 and May 9, dur...
متن کاملImproved Source Imaging of the Kleifarvatn Earthquake, Iceland, through a Combined Use of Ascending and Descending Insar Data
We re-investigated the surface deformation of the Kleifarvatn earthquake on Reykjanes Peninsula, an event that was dynamically triggered by a moderatesize magnitude 6.5 earthquake 80 km away on 17 June 2000. Two ERS-2 interferograms from descending and ascending tracks were formed and used in combination with campaign GPS measurements to invert for the source parameters of rectangular faults fo...
متن کاملQuantification of mass wasting volume associated with the giant landslide Maleh Kabood induced by the 2017 Kermanshah earthquake from InSAR
Radar sensors obtain regular and frequent radar images from which ground motion can be precisely detected using a variety of different techniques. The interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is utilized to retrieve the spatial characteristics of the largest coseismic landslide Maleh-Kabood, induced by the Ms 7.3 Azgleh earthquake in Kermanshah Province, Iran. The available seven interf...
